Final Stop of My Studies (?)
Its already 6 weeks into year 3 sem 1. Recess week is next week and here comes the mountain of assignment/projects and CAs. The only thing that makes me dread recess week a lil would be the upcoming big bang concert - my first kpop concert. And I picked quite a few cui modules this sem. Geography wasnt meant to be like this, and the module title: Physics IN Life Sciences kinda tricked me. Boo. I dont care anymore. Its not like if I score I can make it to honours year. This thought had escaped from my mind since day 1 of uni.
I know I'm kinda jumping here and there but who cares. Its not like anyone's gonna read this so. Anyways, I think I said the wrong thing one fine day, and it couldnt be deleted. Call me sensitive or what, after that incident, I felt like the person involved and those who read the msg were avoiding me. I dont know but thats what I feel. I admit that I'm a bit gan chiong or kiasu but if I dont get things done asap, the stuffs will keep getting stuck in my head and I cant fall asleep. Whats worse is that I have a habit of stopping to study/do assignments and whatnot after 9pm but apparently everyone else around me does the opposite. Seriously, how the hell can you concentrate that late into the night? I'm not kidding but I have NEVER EVER burnt the midnight oil to study. Its isnt of any use even your brain stops working after 9pm right? Like what my ex-colleague said to me once, you can really use your fingers to count the no. of friends who will be there for you when you need them. I've experienced it before too. Loads of disappointment when you hear the excuses that they try so hard to come up with. Sorry but I'm not a fool.
Well, it may be redundant in my case what I still wanna pray and wish that everything will go smoothly and may the bell curve be in my favor for the upcoming CAs (:

人活着的目的是什么?
Dear Boon Sen,
Thanks for being such an awesome manager for the period of time when i was under you. Never failed to bring fun and laughter to us crews. Sorry for always making things tough for you when you were planning our schedules: planning a one-day "strike" by taking off all on the same day letting your store to down-crew, and all the other nonsense we presented. Life was cruel to you (in my opinion) so i hope you aren't suffering now, regretting all those things you could have accomplished but couldn't. I am also sorry for almost wanting to not attend your wake. I am glad I went in the end for I knew you were a great friend to everyone, seeing the attendance that day. Once again, awesome manager! thanks for everything you have done! and may you rest in peace...
Yours Sincerely,
STACY :)

What if you only had 49 days?
Well, after watching right up to the last episode with me being choked with tears i suddenly realized the real intention behind the 49 days. At least she had one last chance to make things right, know the true colours of her friends and fiance, know who truly loved her and last but not least, she had the final chance to say goodbye to her parents. A cruel and tormenting period indeed. Live like its your last day on earth. I havent been able to do that yet cause i know i have many things i wanna accomplish...

Life's Last Journey
Through her, I had a first experience of attending night prayers on the last day of the wake.
Through her, I had a first experience of entering Mandai crematorium.
Through her, I had a first experience of seeing a coffin being wheeled in to be cremated.
Through her, I saw my dad crying for the 1st time (or maybe 2nd, during 二伯's funeral).
She was the best 姑姑 i ever had. Always helping my family when we needed help, although we have never mentioned how tough life was for us. Never wanting to trouble us and therefore, I only saw her once on good friday when we finally found out she was suffering from metastatic breast carcinoma. Even then, she could only stare at us, unable to mouth out any words. And suddenly, on a morning when i was leaving for my SOM CA, i was informed that she had left this world. Mum started crying aloud, emotions were ... Dad had to work and could only rush to the wake late at night. Seeing her lifeless body, everyone started tearing. Even today, tears just unknowingly appeared.
My first time being part of a funeral procession, standing behind the van and walking for a short distance with the entire procession blocking the road and vehicles' path, onlookers watching us out of curiosity... A grand yet solemn affair. Cremation was super fast, like time just zoomed by. Within 1/2 an hour, we were back at her place. Saying our goodbyes and take care phrases, until we meet again.
姑姑, 一路好走。
我会很想你的。
谢谢你,所为我的家人做过的一切。
希望你来世会过的更好。。。

Greatest Gift on Earth - A Child
btw, the lady in the pic isnt the mum but me haha! And he grows tremendously fast! I rmbed the first time i carried him, he was as light as a feather; after a month, he didnt look red now, and was heavier. My 母爱 is starting to creep out of my inner self alrdy haha. But, still LONG LONG way more.
And thus, from late 2011 to 2012, I've experienced so many new things that I've never dreamed to be able to achieve. They (maybe some) were not even on my wish list either.
1. 1st friend's wedding banquet
2. 1st overseas trip with friends (which includes 1st time wearing a life vest, 1st time snorkelling, 1st time banana boating etc)
3. 1st friend's 满月 lunch reception
4. 1st A for a university module (which i absolutely love to bits)
5. 1st close encouter with long-tailed macaques (which includes me getting attacked by a bunch)
And soon, another friend's wedding to attend next month. But alas, before i can look forward to it, I'll have to mug like crazy for my finals. And it aint easy. Imagine all the names: TIM, TOM, SAM, DISC, FADD etc. And no, they aint people's names or cd if you wondered. Well, i need more memory space. Time to upgrade. Anyone with a spare part?

有时候,我们只需要放手
Well, digressing, i tried my utmost best to study and understand the different probabilities and distribution but somehow, when i tried doing last year's stats midterm, i didnt know how to do at least half of them questions. Even those that i managed to figure out the answer, I'm not even sure if they are right. This is the 2nd time that i'm prepared for failure, the 1st being CM1401. As long as i scrape the module without having to repeat, i'm contented. But again, everything has 2 sides. Being able to scrape the module would mean that my already-not-so-fantastic CAP will spiral down like crazy. And there goes my honours. Again, I've learnt to 放开 already so i'm prepared for whatever that comes my way.
With that being said, I still need all the luck in the world for my mid-terms on tues and weds cause who wouldnt want a better grade?

If I Could Turn Back Time
I'm dying every lecture during stats - either the lecturer seriously dont know how to teach, or i'm just plain stupid. I can foresee my CAP falling, and maybe i might need to repeat this module again. i dont know. Call me pessimistic but yeah. I'm sort of prepared for it.
The reason why i hate doing group work/project is this - no one in my group cares to get started at all. I always had to be the one leading. I'm exhausted. How i wished i could have better groupmates. Dateline is this thursday and no one, YES NO ONE STARTED ANYTHING YET. And i cant start too because THE TOPIC HASNT EVEN BEEN DECIDED YET. WTF.

My Early Christmas Present :D

Life is such a joke...
My sister walked into the room with a weird expression on her face, and dropped the earth-shaking news to me. Dad had just been retrenched from his job. At that moment, my face turned red hot and tears came streaming down like nobody's business. Our sole bread winner is now gone. Images flashed through my mind, all those difficult times where we didn't even have enough to eat. No allowances for school, having to give up all my savings to help pay for bills etc. I know this is what we would have to face sooner or later. Why? Why is it always us? Do you know how hard is it for us, when i can't even find the time to work and help lessen his burden? No one knows about this. Even if they knew, what can they do? Not one of our relatives helped us through the last time, except for one. This time, i am prepared for the worst, having to give up my meagre savings again. I want to help him so much but i can't. That's why i used to admire my friends who went to the workforce instead of continuing their studies. At least they can help... All i can do is to pray and hope he can find another job soon, before our savings (no, they are not even savings cause we don't even have) depletes.
Bomb no. 2 dropped on me this morning via a sms. She was the closest friend i ever had in secondary school. The moment i heard the news, i was in a frenzy, rushing to wash up and zoomed straight to her house. Again, tears came rolling down, i don't know what else to do other than consoling her, saying its okay, don't cry. It is easy for say but i know the hurt is there for a dead person won't be coming back. I imagine her to be me - I'll probably be wailing like crazy. This happened during my poly days when my mum was rushed to A&E for breathing difficulties and angina. I cried for days, the house was so quiet, no one to breathe me down my neck, do my things for me.. I thought what if she never came back. what if...
At the age of 21, my major milestone turns out to be this way... Why? I've had enough of obstacles throughout my teenage years. What else now? My turn next? (cause i know i'll probably need a ultrasound soon due that damn problem)

お誕生日おめでとうございます
So grateful to have my family and friends with me to celebrate it.
Was actually kinda last minute decision to plan one, but there were no regrets for I know these memories will last to the day I die.
Special thanks to NIGHTMARE @ SOW 2010, the first bunch to friends I made in my uni life, full of spontaneity and craziness (I can't wait for our Langkawi trip in Dec).
Also to my 2 best friends since secondary school - Amie and Zaty. Time flies and here we are, 8 years of friendship, and many more years to go.
A pity my poly mates and former colleagues didn't make it; was a bit disappointed but... nevermind (:

With everything settled, it's back to studies - 4 consecutive CAs + 2 reports not done.
Mug and mug all the way to finals and it's sem 2.
Seriously, time flies... and it will soon be year 3 of my uni life...

Back to Studies :D
Many memories were made, and this reminded me of SOW 2010 when I first entered NUS, with no friends. 1 year down the road, I'm proud to say I've made many friends from SOW 2010, SOW 2011, lectures, laboratories etc. And they will accompany me down the long road of university study :D
On a side note, I went for my 1st forensic science lecture on friday and it was really an eye-opener. Well, some of the photographs were too much for me and I have them in the back of my mind even till now. This serves as a reminder to me not to take life for granted. Seeing all the different ways and methods those offenders can think of and commit, it really leads me to think: how can they withstand the goreness and cruelty to want to dismember their victims? If they can have such high tolerance to carry out such thing, why can't they use it to admit that they did indeed carry out those gruesome acts? Well, they may get punished but the scar is already there... Now, even when crossing the road, I exercise greater care than before cause I really don't wanna end up like them... Not that its my fault or anything, just that those pictures jolted me up...

The Dilemma of Module Planning
LSM2101 - Metabolism and Regulation (Allocated Core Module):
dealing with the biosynthesis and catabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids; emphasis on integration and regulation of metabolic pathways in different tissues and organs.
(well, this is like LSM1101 - biochemistry module which i didnt do too well, but at least better than LSM1102. will definitely need to pull up my socks)
LSM2102 - Molecular Biology (Allocated Core Module):
dealing with the structure, organisation and function of gene and genomes in prokaryotes and eukaryotes including transcription, post-transcriptional modifications etc.
(this is sooooo MCB stuff which i did badly once again. i just realised i always get the heavy content modules in sem 1 which will pull my CAP down)
GEK1542 - Forensic Science (To Bid For):
intro to lab set-up of Centre for Forensic Science, handling of DNA profiling, death investigation, toxicology and identification of illegal drugs etc.
(this module is so awesome!!!! have always wanted this module but its soooooo expensive. lowest bid pt for last year was 878. i have1027 pts so hopefully that is enough!)
LSM2201A - Experimental Biochemistry (Undecided):
dealing with protein purification and characterisation. includes chromatographic methods and lab practices.
(well, its biochemistry and i didnt do too well. but part of me wants this module)
LSM2203 - Experimental Microbiology (Undecided):
dealing with microbial diversity, biological aspects of microbes, methods and approaches in study of microbiology.
(its just streaking of plates and carrying out of stains i guess... I have totally left out experimental MCB cause i'm not gonna do that man. And with the drawing of lots thingy, i happen to pick this out of 2 tries straight. is that what heaven's telling me to take?)
Anyways, i ought to have a back-up plan in case i don't get forensic science right? I need to have 4 modules max. I dont want to fluster like last sem when my pts wasn't enough ): I still have till monday to decide which expt module to take so... maybe i'll stick with the result of the lots being drawed haha.

It's Time For CORS Again
Yes, i have 3 more days to SOW Prep Camp and i'm using these remaining days to do my module planning. As usual, module planning sucks. I need to scroll through the entire faculty list to look for potential modules to take, having to consider the faculty, general education, breadth and s'pore studies requirements as well as the cut-off MCs for level 1000 modules. Seriously, apart from science, I have no interest in other subjects. But the university requires us to take some subjects which are unrelated to science at all... I always have to crack my brains to try to find something that is UN-SCIENCED. And i swear i don't do well for those, like my business module last semester.
Anyway, after much consideration and discussion with my mum and my RP senior, I have decided to lighten my workload by only taking 4 modules per semester instead of the usual 5. I think i will be able to cope better this way. At least i have some handicap in having exemptions for 5 modules or 1 semester worth of modules. Thus, instead of graduating in 2 and a half yrs (w/o honours), I would take 3 yrs. At least it is better to take lesser modules and score then to take the normal load and fail to score right?
Back to module planning, I can foresee my terrible timetable when school reopens next month. Most of my core modules end at 8pm. Forensic Science is even worse, ending at an unearthly timing of 10pm. Regardless of the sucky timing, i am gonna to dump all my G points to secure this module. Imagine. Forensic Science!!!!! Where in the world can you learn such a module? I'm still considering whether to continue Japanese 2. My skills are so rusty and i think i have forgotten almost 3/4 of the kanji, katakana and hiragana already... And i'm having a headache on whether i should take ecology and environment or bioinformatics; biochemistry or microbiology. Oh god oh god. Really, module planning is killing me ):

Egg-citing December

Another note aside, results were released today vis push SMS. and oh god. i didnt dare to read my msg, which i eventually did. To qoute what my friend said : " i dont know whether to cry or laugh." and "not sure if its really worth calling for a celebration." Very true indeed. It fits totally. The crying part with the lousiest C.A.P that i have seen in my studying history, and the laughing part with chemistry which i had prepared to retake next sem. Well i guess its no use crying over spilled milk for everything is over. Time to embrace the incoming semester and i sincerely hope i will not encounter such disastrous grades ever again. And talking of next sem, only one word: HAIZ. Am i doing a life science major or a computing major? Seriously. Guess i will see myself talking computer language for the whole of sem 2. Well then, prepare for the challenge stacy.Monday, 22 November 2010
A Sore Biochemistry Story
The story is about a mRNA, who felt lonely. So he pulled over a ribosome to translate himself a protein for company.
He said to the protein: Hi, I'm your template.
"Hi, I'm RNase." The protein replied.
There was silence for a very short while, and the mRNA continued: Never mind, I won't live for long anyway. Why not we spend some time together?
"Ok." The protein said.
Then they stood side by side for a while. Suddenly the protein said: Actually I'm not RNase yet.
mRNA: Er.
Protein: I'm now just a polypeptide.
mRNA smiled.
Protein: But I'll become real RNase very soon.
mRNA: It's ok. Eventually I'll die anyway.
Protein stayed close to mRNA. She slowly began to twist, fold and make up herself. She looked more and more like a real RNase. Meanwhile, the mRNA started to degrade.
Protein: I think I'd better leave, maybe you can live longer without me.
mRNA: Don't, don't leave. I have something to tell you.
mRNA: You know, I used to have a template as well, his name is DNA.
Protein: Where is he now?
mRNA: He has been sleeping for very long time. His promoter was switched off.
Protein: Who did that? Will he ever wake up again?
mRNA: It was me.
And then he smiled: But he will wake up. As long as I'm gone, he'll wake up.
mRNA continued: I remembered the time I was just transcribed, the DNA said to me, hi, I'm your template. I said, hi, I'm mRNA. Then he smiled and said, nice to meet you. Then he slowly fell asleep.
Protein didn't say anything.
"I missed him a lot." mRNA's voice started to fade, "I'm vanishing. If he wake up, and happen to meet you, would you say hi to him one more time for me?"
And then the mRNA was degraded.
============================================
DNA slowly woke up and saw a little protein standing by, looking at him carefully.
Protein: Hi, I am RNase.
DNA: Hi, I am DNA.
Protein: Hi.
Protein: This second Hi, is from mRNA.
DNA remembered, last time before he fell asleep, he just transcribed a mRNA, but he only said a hi before he fell asleep.
DNA: Where is the mRNA now?
Protein replied without an answer: mRNA said he missed you so much.
DNA smiled: I miss him as well.
Protein: He has already degraded.
…
Protein: But sometimes I would rather be like him.
DNA: Why?
Protein looked at DNA for seconds: Because you miss him as well.
Protein felt wet suddenly, he cried.....and the he hydrolyzed.
===========================================================
DNA finally transcribed another mRNA.
DNA: Hi. I am your template.
mRNA: Hi. I am mRNA.
DNA looked at him, softly said: You look like him, actually exactly the same.
mRNA: Who?
DNA: Oh, another mRNA I transcribed last time.
He paused and said: You two look just the same.....why......why am I still missing him so much?.....
DNA closed his eyes again...........
===========================================================
If we can only encounter each other rather than stay with each other, maybe it's better to just be an intron?
